The Tharavadu Story – A Leeds Original, A UK Landmark

An Indian Restaurant That Changed Leeds Forever

In 2014, five friends — Siby Jose, Ajith Nair, Rajesh Nair, Manoharan Gopal, and Prakash Mendonca — asked a simple question: “Why isn’t there a restaurant in Leeds serving authentic Keralan cuisine?”

At the time, Leeds was full of “curry houses,” where Indian food was often reduced to chicken tikka masala and naan bread. But the unique flavours of Kerala, South India — with their rich spices, coconut, curry leaves, and seafood — were missing.

The answer became Tharavadu, which opened its doors in June 2014 with one mission: to bring an authentic taste of Kerala to Yorkshire.

Why the Name “Tharavadu”?

In Malayalam, Kerala’s language, Tharavadu means “ancestral home.” More than just a restaurant, it symbolises a place of tradition, warmth, and authenticity — the same values that guide every dish on our menu.

Leeds Welcomed Us With Open Arms

The city responded immediately. Within the first week of opening, Tharavadu was ranked among the Top 10 restaurants in Leeds on TripAdvisor. Our philosophy of “pure devotion to quality and authenticity” resonated, proving that people were ready for something different.

From humble beginnings, Tharavadu grew into more than just a local favourite. It became a UK landmark for Indian dining, recognised nationwide for its innovation, hospitality, and authenticity.

A Decade of Legacy in Leeds
